Read Write Inc. Phonics (4+)

For children aged 4 - 7 (can also be used with 8 - 9 year olds for catch up)

Read Write Inc. (formerly known as Ruth Miskin Literacy or RML) is a lively phonic programme that gets children reading and writing fast. The interesting storybooks and non-fiction books are carefully graded so that children feel safe and confident as they learn to read and write.

Choose from a range of books designed for use in the classroom and at home.

The excellent Read Write Inc. resources can also be used very effectively alongside other reading schemes.

Dandelion Books (4+ )

Dandelion Books ( Phonic Books) are becoming increasingly popular in schools throughout the UK for children age 4 through to young adults. They are produced by experienced Special Needs teachers who help struggling readers through one-to-one tuition and help train teachers and teaching assistants in how to teach reading using phonics.

The Phonic Books scheme began with a range of good decodable reading books and is evolving into an excellent stand alone reading and writing scheme, providing a variety of multisensory activities and games to help develop the skills underlying fluency in reading and writing.

We would highly recommend this programme for anyone teaching children to read - the workbooks accompanying the reading books are particularly useful for those who are attempting to teach to read for the first time.

Discounts are available on Dandelion Books orders over £100.

Letters and Sounds (4+)

Letters and Sounds is a teaching programme published free by the Department for Education (DfE) that is used in many schools throughout the UK to teach children how to read and spell with phonics.

Floppy's Phonics Sounds and Letters is fully matched to Letters and Sounds, providing teachers with the resources they need to teach the programme effectively.

Further resources that have been specifically designed to support Letters and Sounds can be found in our Games and Activities section and a wide range of books that follow the Letters and Sounds progression can be found in our Decodable Reading Books section.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start (9+)

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start gives older primary and lower secondary children who have not yet cracked the 'code of reading' the chance to catch up and become confident, fluent readers - enabling them to access the secondary curriculum. Ideal for paired / group work or working one to one with a pupil.

Using the same dynamic teaching strategies as Read Write Inc. Phonics, children are taught the 44 sounds systematically in lively, fast paced phonics lessons and quickly start to sound blend them to read words.

Fresh Start Modules and anthologies provide specially written age-appropriate stories and non-fiction texts which the children have the phonic knowledge to read, building their confidence from the start. Writing is developed alongside reading.

Decodable Reading Books (all ages)

Decodable reading books are used in the early stages of teaching children to read with phonics. They contain only (or mainly) text that can be ‘decoded’ (or sounded out) based on the letter-sounds the child has already been taught. This encourages children to sound out words and blend sounds to read words, rather than guessing words from pictures or context.

In this section, we have put together an excellent range of decodable reading books (including fiction and non-fiction) for children of all ages. Some of these books form part of complete reading and writing programmes, and some (such as Songbirds and Ragtag Rhymes) are stand alone decodable reading books. All can be used alongside any good phonic reading scheme.
