High frequency (common) words are those that recur frequently in much of the written material young children read and that they need when they write.

The vast majority of words are decodable once letter sounds have been taught. When children first begin to read and write simple sentences, however, they will need to use common words containing spellings that they have not yet been taught.

They will also need to use words that have unusual spellings (such as 'here', 'does', 'was', 'one') These are known as 'tricky' words and need to be learned by heart.

This leaflet is a list of the 300 most common words in order of frequency.
